Bobcats of the week of Sept. 10, 2007

Although the Bates men's soccer team came up at the short end of a 3-0 score in its season opener against Bowdoin on Saturday, the score is somewhat deceiving. The Bobcats trailed only 1-0 until 15 minutes remained in the game, and Dustin DiGregorio'sshot midway through the second half came within a hair of tying the game at 1-all.Bowdoin took 30 shots in the game, and Bates' All-NESCAC goalkeeper, senior Robert Wesley-Munro (Walpole, Mass.), saved 11 of them, using outstanding reflexes on several from close range. He now ranks first in the conference in saves per game in the early going.

Wesley-Munro and the Bobcats will host Amherst on Saturday afternoon in another NESCAC contest.

Abby Childs '09
The Bates field hockey team had a strong start to the 2007 season over the weekend, with a 3-1 victory over Babson College on Saturday followed by a 1-1 tie with No. 18 nationally ranked Skidmore College on Sunday.Junior forward Abby Childs (Philadelphia, Pa.) played a key role in both games. She scored an insurance goal in the second half of the Babson game, converting an assist from classmate Emily Sampson(Plymouth, N.H.) to make it 3-1. The next day, in just the third minute of the Skidmore game, Childs deftly served up an assist on senior Erin Chandler's (Thornton, Pa.) blast, which ricocheted into the net for an early 1-0 lead.

Childs is now in a three-way tie for the team scoring lead with Sampson and senior Caitlin Tamposi (Temple, N.H.), with three points apiece.
