Chamique Holdsclaw to visit Bates, present documentary film

Chamique Holdsclaw will spend time with the Bates women's basketball team before screening her documentary film on campus on Jan. 30, 2017. 

LEWISTON, Maine -- Chamique Holdsclaw has dedicated her life's work to mental health and wellness activism after a show-stopping career in women's basketball, playing for the University of Tennessee Lady Volunteers under Hall of Fame Coach Pat Summitt, becoming a WNBA No. 1 draft pick and winning an Olympic gold medal. 

On Monday, Jan. 30, Holdsclaw will visit Bates College for a public screening of her biographical documentary film in the Olin Arts Center, followed by a panel discussion. Holdsclaw will also visit with the Bates women's basketball team prior to the screening.

Holdsclaw's visit is co-sponsored by the Bates Department of Athletics and NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) Maine.

Holdsclaw's film, "Mind/Game: The Unquiet Journey of Chamique Holdsclaw," is produced and directed by twice Academy Award-nominated documentary filmmaker Rick Goldsmith, and narrated by actress and fellow mental health activist Glenn Close, recipient of an honorary degree from Bates in 2014 for her acting and advocacy. Bates alumna Lauren Kawana '06 was an associate producer. 

The film will be shown at 7:30pm in Olin Concert Hall. Following the film, Holdsclaw will participate in a discussion panel, including a NAMI representative and Bates Interim Director of Counseling and Psychological Services Luke Douglass and Multifaith Chaplain Brittany Longsdorf, and engage in questions from the audience.
