LEWISTON, Maine -- Bates College will host its first carnival since 2005 this weekend as the Eastern Intercollegiate Ski Association circuit kicks off the 2008 season.

Defending NCAA champion Dartmouth College will join Vermont, New Hampshire, Middlebury, Williams, Colby, St. Michael's and St. Lawrence, among other teams, to compete at the Bates ski teams' home sites. Alpine ski events will all take place at Sunday River in Bethel, Maine, while the nordic events will be held at Black Mountain in Rumford, Maine.

The local forecast for Friday calls for warm temperatures and rain, so the schedule of Alpine events has moved back one day for optimal race conditions at Sunday River. Slaloms will run on Saturday beginning at 9:30 a.m., and the giant slalom will take place Sunday.

The carnival gets officially under way on Friday, Jan. 11 at 9:30 a.m., with the Women's 10K Classic Nordic race at Black Mountain.

The Bates ski team is consistently one of the most successful programs at Bates, finishing among the top 21 schools at the NCAA Championships in the nation for 11 straight years. Seven Bates skiers qualified for NCAAs in 2007 as the Bobcats finished 13th in the nation. In 2006 Bates sent a school-record eight skiers to NCAAs, and the Bobcats finished 12th overall and second among traditionally Division III schools, their best placing since 1998.
