Campus set for winter season's busiest weekend of sports

LEWISTON, Maine -- The campus of Bates College will see its biggest athletics weekend of the winter season this Friday and Saturday, including big home events for men's basketball, women's indoor track and field, men's indoor track and field, men's and women's squash and men's and women's swimming and diving.

The Bates men's basketball team will host defending conference champion Amherst on Friday night at 7 p.m., followed by NESCAC rival Trinity College on Saturday at 3 p.m. Both games will be webcast live at As a special treat, Friday's game against Amherst will be televised by Youth News & Entertainment Television (YNETV). The game will be shown on tape delay on Saturday night (8 p.m.) on WPXT-TV, Maine's CW affiliate station.

Also on Friday night, the Bates women's track and field team will host the 2009 Maine Indoor Women's Track and Field Championships at the recently resurfaced Merrill Indoor Gymnasium, starting at 6 p.m. The meet will be followed one night later, on Saturday at 6 p.m., with the State of Maine Men's Indoor Track and Field Championships. Both meets are annual highlights of the indoor season for participating schools Bates, Bowdoin, Colby and Southern Maine.

The Bates men's and women's squash teams will host the Maine Invitational this Friday and Saturday, with teams visiting from George Washington University, MIT, Northeastern University, Tufts University and the University of Toronto visiting the Bates Squash Center at 56 Alfred Plourde Parkway in Lewiston. The tournament schedule is as follows:

Saturday, Feb. 7

9 a.m. George Washington Men v. MIT men

6 p.m. Bates Women vs. Northeastern

On Saturday at 1 p.m., the Bates men's and women's swimming and diving teams will host their final home meet of the season, with Connecticut College and Wellesley College visiting Tarbell Pool.

Away from campus, the Bates women's basketball team plays at Amherst on Friday at 7 p.m. and at Trinity College on Saturday at 3 p.m. in a pair of key NESCAC contests. The alpine and Nordic ski teams, meanwhile, travel to the University of Vermont Winter Carnival, with the alpine teams competing at Stowe Mountain Resort and the Nordic teams competing at Trapp Family Lodge, also in Stowe, Vt.
