LEWISTON, Maine – Bates College fall sport teams, other than football, began their preseasons with a testing day on Wednesday and their first true practices of 2013 on Thursday.

Fall sports began their preseasons this week.

Men’s soccer, women’s soccer, field hockey, and volleyball each started their preparations for their 2013 seasons this week with various activities including speed testing, skills training, and strength work. Men’s soccer (Sept. 3), women’s soccer (Sept. 7), field hockey (Sept. 5), and volleyball (Sept. 6) all play their first games next week.

Men’s Soccer

After baseline concussion testing in the morning, men’s soccer took to Leahey Field for fitness testing on Wednesday afternoon. Players worked through a number of speed tests including the T-Drill, 5-10-5 pro agility, the 20-yard dash, and a number of other barometers for fitness.

On Thursday, the team spent a full day on the pitch practicing with soccer balls for the first time in 2013. The team held a morning session focusing on possession and small sided games before taking part in an afternoon technique period. In the evening, the coaching staff evaluated players as they competed in a four-team tournament on Russell Street Field.

Women’s Soccer

The women’s soccer team held both speed testing and endurance testing in its first day of the preseason on Wednesday. After agility testing in the morning, the team took to Russell Street Track for a two-mile test.

On Thursday, the squad held a technical session in the morning with goalkeepers working in a separate training session. In the evening the team moved out to Lafayette Field for small-sided play.

Field Hockey

Field hockey began the 2013 season with a morning testing period and an evening weight lifting session on Wednesday. The team held its fitness testing on its home turf, Campus Avenue Field, and took to the Davis Fitness Center later in the day for strength training. The team’s new coaching staff had its first opportunity to implement on-field coaching on Thursday as the squad held morning, afternoon, and evening practice sessions on the turf.

Volleyball began its preseason on Wednesday with morning testing periods both in Alumni Gym and in the Davis Fitness Center inside Underhill Arena. On Thursday, the team held practice sessions in the morning and afternoon before returning to the Davis Center for strength work in the early evening.
