HANCOCK, Mass. -- Senior captain Hannah Johnson finished tied for 12th out of 62 skiers to lead the Bates women's alpine skiing team to sixth place out of 13 schools Friday in the giant slalom at the Williams Carnival.
Johnson (Incline Village, Nev.) recorded a two-run combined time of 1:45.66, tying Dartmouth's Stephanie Lebby for 12th place and earning 30 carnival points to go along with 22 NCAA points.
The Bates women placed four skiers in the top 30 on Friday and combined for 76 carnival points, only six points behind fifth place Middlebury.
Senior captain Sierra Ryder (Orinda, Calif.) finished 20th with a two-run combined time of 1:46.35, good for 25 carnival points and 11 NCAA points. First-year Hannah West (Bend, Ore.) continued her strong start to her career with a 25th place finish, recording a two-run combined time of 1:46.84 to pick up 21 carnival points and six NCAA points.
Only the top three skiers from each school earn carnival points, but sophomore Griffin Mueller (West Vail, Colo.) earned a pair of NCAA points for her 29th place finish with a two-run combined time of 1:48.67.
The Bates men placed 10th out of 13 schools with 36 carnival points in the GS.
Sophomore Tagert Mueller (West Vail, Colo.) led the way with a two-run combined time of 1:45.25, good for 32nd place out of 62 competitors and 16 carnival points. First-year Calvin Wilson (Canyon Dam, Calif.) earned 12 carnival points with his 39th place finish thanks to a two-run combined time of 1:47.24. First-year Joe Gillis (Branford, Conn.) rounded out the scoring with a 45th place finish, good for eight carnival points.
The Bates alpine skiing teams combined with the Nordic teams to sit in eighth place out of 15 schools following day one of the Williams Carnival. The alpine teams compete in the slalom on Saturday to wrap up their final carnival before the NCAA Regionals.
