Lyons (Hamilton, Mass.) and Upton (Winthrop, Mass.) shared the defensive Garnet Gridder award. Lyons started all eight games, whether at free safety or cornerback. He was second on the team with five interceptions, including 104 return yards, and nine passes defended, and he ranked third on the team in solo tackles (35). Lyons also returned punts for Bates 16 times for 93 yards.
Upton was second in the NESCAC in total tackles (71) and tackles per game (8.9), and led the conference in forced fumbles (3) for the second year in a row. He led the Bobcats in sacks (4) and tackles for loss (8), and was named by NESCAC coaches for the second straight year to the All-Conference First Team Defense. Upton was also one of four linebackers named to the 2015 New England Football Writers Selection Division II/III All-Star team.
