Field hockey ends season on a winning note at Colby








WATERVILLE, Maine -- Bates sophomore Polly Merck scored about four minutes into the second half and sophomore goaltender Becca Otley (Cumberland, Maine) earned the shutout as the Bates field hockey team closed the season with a 1-0 victory over Colby in New England Small College Athletic Conference play Wednesday at Bill Alfond Field.

Bates finishes up at 4-10 overall and 2-8 in the conference, while Colby also closes out the season at 4-10 overall and 1-9 in the league.

Merck (Beverly, Mass.) scored the first goal of her college career with 30:58 left in the second half. In a scramble in front of the net, Merck knocked the ball past Colby goalie Michelle Burt, who made four saves for the Mules.

Otley (Falmouth, Maine) made seven saves to post her third shutout of the season, in her return to action after missing the past two and a half games due to injury.

Finishing out their careers on a winning note were Bates' five seniors: Lyndsay Beaton (West Newbury, Mass.), Amanda Brusca (Beverly, Mass.), co-captain Kelly McManus (Plymouth, N.H.), co-captain Sarah Merullo (Essex, Mass.) and Mackenzie Ross (North Yarmouth, Maine).
