Field hockey falls to No. 14 Amherst College, 6-0

LEWISTON, Maine – No. 14 Amherst College field hockey scored twice in the first 10 minutes and added four more goals on the way to a 6-0 win over Bates College at a sun-splashed Campus Avenue Field on Sunday afternoon.

Four different players tallied goals for the Lord Jeffs (5-2, 4-1 NESCAC) with a different player accounting for each of the team's four first-half tallies against the Bobcats (1-7, 0-6).

Alex Philie opened the scoring in the eighth minute with a shot from the top of the circle before Katie Paolano posted a goal less than two minutes later off a rebound. The visitors notched another two goals in the opening half – the first from Kerry Fusco and the second off the stick of Sara Culhane. Krista Zsitvay assisted on both goals, finding her teammates in front of the cage both times.

Paolano recorded the Lord Jeffs' opening goal of the second half at the 47:19 mark before Culhane contributed an insurance tally in the 66th minute.

Amherst held advantages over Bates in shots (27-6), shots on goal (15-0), and penalty corners (9-5). Philie led the Lord Jeffs with six shots while Culhane paced the visitors with four shots on goal. Goalkeepers Rachel Tannenbaum and Emily Horowitz combined for the shutout.

For the Bobcats, senior Lexie Carter (Saco, Maine) registered a team-high three shots while senior captain Sarah Warden (North Andover, Mass.) took two shots. Senior goalie Becca Otley (Cumberland, Maine) made four saves in the first half while sophomore net-minder Cristina Vega (Needham, Mass.) stopped two shots in the second period.

Bates gained its best opportunity to score in the 33rd minute when a Carter shot went just wide of the mark shortly after a penalty corner from first-year Sydney Cowles (Wayne, Pa.).

Next, Bates plays at the University of Southern Maine on Thursday at 4 p.m. while Amherst hosts Keene State on Thursday at 4:15 p.m.
