Carter scores in field hockey's 2-1 (OT) loss at Colby

WATERVILLE, Maine – Senior Lexie Carter tied the game in the 57th minute, but Megan Fortier scored the game-winner in overtime as Bates College field hockey fell to Colby College, 2-1, on Wednesday evening at Alfond Field in the regular season finale for each team.

Fortier tallied the golden goal for the Mules (9-5, 5-5 NESCAC) in the 81st minute as Misha Strage attacked along the right side then passed the ball in front of the cage to Fortier who beat sophomore goalie Cristina Vega (Needham, Mass) of the Bobcats (4-10, 1-9 NESCAC) in a one-on-one situation.

Just over 20 minutes into the second half, the visitors earned a penalty corner which senior co-captain Polly Merck (Beverly Farms, Mass.) injected. Merck's service found its way to sophomore Hannah Beinecke (Manchester, Mass.) who fed the ball to Carter (Saco, Maine) who knocked a shot past Colby goalie Sarah Evans.

Strage scored the game's first goal with an unassisted tally in the 46th minute on the Mules' only shot of the second stanza's first 21:30. Bates outshot Colby 6-1 during that stretch, including three shots (two on goal) from sophomore Shannon Beaton (West Newbury, Mass.).

The hosts put pressure on the visitors' defense at the end of regulation capturing five penalty corners and taking three shots in the final ten minutes of regular time. Colby then posted five shots to Bates' one in the extra period.

In the win, Evans made seven saves while Vega stopped five shots on the other end.

Junior Caroline Falcone (New Canaan, Conn.) paced the Bobcats with four shots (three on goal) while Beaton followed with three shots (two on goal). Fortier led all players with five shots and four shots on goal with Strage and Caitlin Murray supporting her with three shots apiece.

Colby held narrow advantages in shots (15-14) and penalty corners (5-4).
