MIDDLEBURY, Vt. -- Jillian Green and Catherine Fowler scored two goals apiece as No. 3 nationally ranked Middlebury defeated the Bates field hockey team 6-0 in a NESCAC game Saturday.
The Panthers (11-1, 7-1 NESCAC) scored four times in the first half, led off by Green in the 13th and 26th minutes, to put the game out of reach. Middlebury outshot Bates 25-3.
All three of the Bobcats' shot attempts were on goal -- one by sophomore Sydney Cowles (Wayne, Pa.) and two by first-year Delaney Nalen (Englewood, Colo.). Nalen also had two defensive saves in the game.
Juniors Cristina Vega (Needham, Mass.) and Katie Knox (Bronxville, N.Y.) split goalkeeping duties for the Bobcats. Vega made seven saves while allowing four goals in the first half. Knox posted three saves and allowed two goals in the quieter second period. After outshooting Bates 20-0 in the first half, the count was a starkly different 5-3 in the Panthers' favor in the second. Bates matched Middlebury in penalty corners in the second half, 4-4.
Emily Knapp made three saves for Middlebury and Evangeline Dunphy played the final two minutes to split the shutout.
