Rutkin '17 leads men's golf at Bowdoin Invitational

BRUNSWICK, Maine -- First-year Brad Rutkin tied for ninth place among 71 players on the first day of the Bowdoin Invitational, then finished 16th overall after two days of the competitive season-opening tournament for the Bates men's golf team.

The Bobcats placed 12th among 13 teams, edging Colby by four strokes, 685-689. UMaine Farmington was nine strokes ahead in 11th place. Middlebury won the event at 605.

Rutkin (Great Neck, N.Y.) carded a 77 on Saturday, and followed with an 82 on Sunday to pace Bates, tying five other players for 16th place at 159 (Southern Maine's Tom Murray was the overall medalist at 148).

Senior Garrett Johnson (Lexington, Mass.) followed his Saturday 87 with an 84, tying for 51st place overall. Junior Garret Bonney (Sudbury, Mass.) carded a 174 and first-year Sam Mellert (Hanover, N.H.) shot a two-day score of 182 to round out Bates' scoring.

Bates men's golf next plays at the UMF Invitational on Sept. 12 at Sunday River Golf Club. The women's team opens play with a head-to-head match against Bowdoin at Brunswick Golf Course on Sept. 14.
