BETHEL, Maine -- First-year players comprised the bulk of the scoring for the Bates men's golf team on Thursday, as the Bobcats placed seventh among eight teams at the UMF Invitational, played at the par-72 Sunday River Golf Club.

Freshman Tom Garone (Franklin Lakes, N.J.) led the way for the Bobcats, shooting a strong 39 on the back nine to finish 12 over par, at 84. Garone tied for 23rd place with two others among 40 players at the tournament.

First-year Alex Stekler (Avon, Conn.) followed with an 86, tying for 28th. Senior Zachary Abbott (Rangeley, Maine) tied for 33rd place with a 90, and first-year Sam Mellert (Hanover, N.H.)) rounded out Bates' scoring at 91, with senior Sean Thomas (Mississauga, Ontario) right behind him at 92.

The men's golf team plays this Saturday and Sunday at Bangor Municipal Golf Course for the two-day Maine State Championships. The Bates women's team will make its season debut with a dual match at Bowdoin on Saturday.
