Men's golf sits in fifth place at state championship

BANGOR, Maine -- First-year Brad Rutkin is tied for eighth place and senior captain Garrett Johnson is tied for 11th among 54 players, leading the Bates men's golf team to fifth place among 11 teams after one day at the Maine State Golf Championships at Bangor Municipal Golf Course.

Rutkin (Great Neck, N.Y.) shot a 6-over-par 78, tying with Husson's Lancer Bernier and Bowdoin's Bobby Kaminski as eighth best among individuals. Johnson (Lexington, Mass.) was right behind with a 79, tying with UMPI's Reynold Brown and St. Joseph's' Ryan Berard for 11th.

First-year Alex Stekler (Avon, Conn.) turned in an 86, tying for 27th, and junior Garret Bonney (Sudbury, Mass.) carded a 91, tying for 44th, rounding out Bates' scoring.

The tournament continues tomorrow in Bangor.
