BANGOR, Maine -- Senior captain Garrett Johnson and first-year Brad Rutkin both earned All-State honors in leading the Bates men's golf team to fifth place among 11 teams at the two-day Maine State Men's Golf Championship, concluded Sunday at Bangor Municipal Golf Course.

Bates' top four scorers scored the third-best combined score of the second day, combining for a two-day score of 648. Husson won at 595, followed by Southern Maine (617, UMPI (636), Bowdoin (638), Bates, Colby (653), St. Joseph's (658), UNE (662), Maine Maritime (663), UMaine-Farmington (667) and UMaine-Augusta (697).

Johnson (Lexington, Mass.) racked up 12 pars and added one birdie on Sunday for a five-over-par 76, three lower than Saturday's 79. On Saturday, Johnson shot three birdies but added five bogeys and two double-bogeys. Johnson's two-day score of 155 put him alone in ninth place among 55 players, earning him his first All-State award.

Rutkin (Great Neck, N.Y.) matched his first-day score of 78 on Sunday, including nine pars and two birdies. His two-day score of 156 tied him for 10th place out of 55 competitors with Bowdoin's Bobby Kaminski.

Johnson and Rutkin are Bates' first All-State duo since Mike Kelen '11 and Lee Smith '12 pulled off the feat in 2008.

First-year Alex Stekler (Avon, Conn.) fired a 77 on Sunday, nine fewer strokes than Saturday's round, to tie for 25th with two other players. Junior Garret Bonney (Sudbury, Mass.) shot an 83 Sunday to finish 45th at 174.

The Bates men compete Sept. 21-22 at the Husson Invitational, at Penboscot Valley Country Club in Orono.
