AUGUSTA, Maine -- Senior Garrett Johnson kept up his strong play of late with a career-high third-place showing among 40 players on Saturday at the Mariner Invitational, held at par-70 Augusta Country Club.

The team captain's performance led the Bobcats to fourth place among eight teams at the tournament, with a four-man combined score of 327 (+47). Husson won the event at 302, followed by Southern Maine (303), Maine Maritime (312), Bates (327), UMaine-Presque Isle (329), the University of New England (329), UMaine-Farmington (335) and Colby (336).

Johnson (Lexington, Mass.) missed medalist honors by a mere stroke, at a 4-over-par 74 trailing only Tom Murray of USM and Bill Hutchins of Husson. Johnson tied for ninth at last weekend's NESCAC Fall Qualifier.

First-year Tom Garone (Franklin Lakes, N.J.) tied for 20th place with an 81. Seniors Zach Abbott (Rangeley, Maine) and Aidan Schmidtberger (Upper Black Eddy, Pa.) both shot an 86 to tie for 28th place.

The Bobcats compete on Saturday at the Colby Invitational in Waterville, while the women's team begins play at the two-day Williams Fall Classic.
