Men's golf fourth out of 12 teams on Day 1 of Bowdoin Invitational

BRUNSWICK, Maine -- The Bates men's golf team had a big first day of the 2014 season Saturday, as three sophomores scored among the top 15 out of 60 players overall. 

Halfway through the event, Bates is in fourth place out of 12 teams, a year after finishing 12th out of 13. The Bobcats' top four players combined to shoot 313, trailing only Middlebury (302), Endicott (303) and Providence (303). Fifth-place St. Anselm, a Division II team, is nine strokes behind Bates with one day remaining, while Bowdoin is sixth at 329.

Sophomore Tom Garone (Franklin Lakes, N.J.) is tied for seventh place with Middlebury's Chris Atwood at 75, while classmates Brad Rutkin (Great Neck, N.Y.) and Alex Stekler (Avon, Conn.) are in a five-way tie for 15th place at 77. Senior captain Garret Bonney (Sudbury, Mass.) rounds out Bates' scoring at 84, and first-year Edmund Pierce (Winnetka, Ill.) carded an 87 in his collegiate debut.

The tournament finishes up at Brunswick Golf Course on Sunday.
