CLINTON, N.Y. -- A strong second day of play helped the Bates men's golf team finish a close eighth place out of 10 teams as the NESCAC Men's Golf Fall Qualifier concluded Sunday at Skenandoa Golf Club.
First-year Matt Marcus (Newton, Mass.) fired a second-day round of 78 and led the Bobcats for the tournament with a two-day score of 159, tying for 28th place among 49 players.
Sophomore Alex Stekler (Avon, Conn.) shot a 162 for 31st place. Sophomore Brad Rutkin (Great Neck, N.Y.) tied for 33rd place at 164 after his team-best-tying 78 on Sunday, and senior Garret Bonney (Sudbury, Mass.) carded a 166 to tie for 36th place and round out Bates' scoring.
Middlebury, which finished with a 36-hole team score of 599, claimed the top spot at the qualifier for the fourth time in eight years and earned the honor of hosting the 2015 NESCAC Golf Championship on April 25-26. The Panthers will host the event on campus at Ralph Myhre Golf Course.
Hamilton, Trinity and Williams will join Middlebury at the championship next April. Hamilton's two-day team score was 600 and Trinity and Williams tied for third place at 603. The same four teams held down the top four spots after Saturday's first round. Tufts ended up in fifth place at 615 after a four-man team score of 300 on Sunday.
The Bobcats finished ninth at the same tournament a year ago.
Bates next plays at the MMA Invitational Oct. 2 in Augusta.
