Saltzman ties for second place at MMA Invitational

AUGUSTA, Maine -- First-year student Bennett Saltzman tied for the second-best score of the day among 31 players, as the Bates men's golf team placed fifth out of six teams Thursday at the MMA Invitational, held at par-70 Augusta Country Club.

Tournament host Maine Maritime won the event with a four-man combined score of 329, 49 over par. UMaine-Presque Isle (332), Southern Maine (335), the University of New England (347), Bates (352) and UMaine-Farmington (355) rounded out the field.

Saltzman (Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.) shot two birdies and nine pars on the 6,214-yard course and finished with a 78, just a stroke behind overall leader Tom Murray of Southern Maine.

First-year Edmund Pierce (Winnetka, Ill.) came next for Bates, tying for 18th place with an 88. First-year Quinn Gardner (Tucson, Ariz.) and sophomore Sam Mellert (Hanover, N.H.) rounded out the Bobcats' scoring in 23rd and 24th place, respectively, at 92 and 94.

The Bates men's golf team competes at the Colby Invitational Saturday at Waterville Golf Club, while the women's team will play at the two-day Williams Fall Classic Saturday and Sunday in Williamstown, Mass.
