LaVerghetta heads strong second day of Williams Fall Invitational for women's golf

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- Junior Elizabeth LaVerghetta shot a second-day score of 91 in leading the Bates women's golf team to 14th place at the two-day Williams Fall Invitational, which concluded Sunday at Taconic Golf Club.

The Bobcats combined for a four-player score of 379 on Sunday, 21 strokes under their first-day score, to finish at 779, well ahead of 15th-place Union (820) and 16th-place Westfield State (918). Bates was sixth among NESCAC teams, and trailed rival and 13th-place Bowdoin by only seven strokes. Host Williams won the tournament at 624.

LaVerghetta (Norton, Mass.) placed 49th out of 83 players overall, shooting a 94 on Saturday and a 91 Sunday on the par-71, 5,819-yard course. First-year Kelly Wassarman (Middleton, Wis.) came in 54th at 193, sophomore Emily Plotnikov (Brooklyn, N.Y.) tied for 61st at 198 and sophomore Sarah Centanni (Hingham, Mass.) tied for 70th place at 204.

The tournament concludes the 2014 fall season for Bates women's golf, which remains one of only two varsity women's golf programs in Maine.
