Women's golf takes 10th place at Middlebury Invitational

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. -- Led by sophomore Kelly Wassarman and senior Elizabeth LaVerghetta, the Bates women's golf team finished in 10th place out of 12 teams Sunday as the Middlebury Women's Golf Invitational concluded at Ralph Myrhre Golf Course.

Wassarman followed up her first-day score of 88 on Saturday with a 93 on Sunday, finishing in a tie for 37th place among 79 players with a combined score of 181. Bobcat captain LaVerghetta posted a team-best 91 on Sunday to finish 46th at 189. 

Junior Sarah Centanni (Hingham, Mass.) placed 61st after shooting a 102 on Sunday, and junior Emily Plotnikov (Brooklyn, N.Y.) tied for 64th at 209. Junior Penelope Ganske (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) came in fifth for Bates, tying for 69th at 222.

Rival Bowdoin passed Bates on the tournament's second day, coming from four strokes behind the Bobcats to finish at 778, seven strokes ahead of Bates (785). Bates came ahead of William Smith (804) and Johnson & Wales (968). Williams won the tournament at 642.
