LEWISTON, Maine -- Bates College Director of Athletics Kevin McHugh today announced the Bobcat men's and women's varsity golf team's coaching staff for 2016-17 academic year.
Robert Flynn, the longtime multi-sport coach at Bates who passed away this summer, had been the golf program's head coach for a total of 18 years, including the past eight.
James Upham, third-year assistant coach for the men's and women's Nordic ski teams, has taken over management aspects of both teams, including scheduling, travel arrangements, budget oversight, equipment purchase and recruiting. Upham will also travel with one or the other team, depending on the schedule. "James is highly competitive and wants anything he is associated with to excel. So he already has high expectations for both teams," said McHugh.
The Bates golf teams will additionally benefit from the instruction of Nick Glicos and Kyle Bourassa, the head and assistant golf pros at Martindale Country Club, Bates' longtime home course and practice site, located in Auburn, Maine.
"Nick and Kyle will be instructors/coaches for the teams, running qualifying for each team, structuring weekly practices, determining the line-ups for competitions and offering instruction for both men's and women's teams on a weekly basis," McHugh said. "I believe this is a fairly unique arrangement, but I believe that this is the best way now to transition from Coach Flynn's leadership."
Now entering his third year as head Nordic coach Becky Woods' assistant, Upham boasts a wide breadth of knowledge about Nordic skiing. He served as head Paralympic Nordic coach for the U.S. Biathlon Association, following an eight-year stint as the association's development coach. He directly coached five athletes to the 2006 Olympic Biathlon team in Turin, Italy, and he coached athletes to four medals at the 2010 and 2014 Paralympic Games. From 1999 to 2001, Upham worked as Nordic specialist at Swixsport USA, and prior to that he was head Nordic coach and history teacher at Burke Mountain Academy.
Upham won a junior national biathlon championship and competed on two junior world championship teams. His father, Tom Upham, competed in the 1968 Winter Olympics and coached the U.S. women's cross country ski team at the 1976 Winter Olympics. Coach Upham graduated magna cum laude in 1995 from Northern Michigan University.
Glicos, Director of Golf and co-owner of Martindale Country Club, was hired in 2007 as head golf professional. He has competed in many events throughout the state, winning the Assistant's Championship at Martindale in 2001 and the Maine Individual Match Play Championship at Falmouth in 2007. He attended Elon College in Burlington, N.C., and played on the golf team before settling in Maine and entering the Professional Golfers' Association of America. Glicos also worked at Spring Meadows Golf Club in Gray, Maine, from 2003 to 2006.
