Bowdoin tops women's golf in season-opening competitions

BRUNSWICK, Maine -- Host Bowdoin defeated the Bates women's golf team in head-to-head match play on Saturday and in team stroke play on Sunday as the only two women's varsity golf teams in Maine opened the fall season at Brunswick Golf Club. 

In Saturday's action, four out of five individual match-play contests were won by the Polar Bears, while Bates senior captain Penelope Ganske (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) finished in a tie with Bowdoin's Emme McCabe. Caroline Farber led the Polar Bears, defeating Bates junior Kelly Wassarman (Middleton, Wis.) 7 & 6, grabbing a seven-hole lead with six holes remaining.

Sunday's stroke play competition saw the Bobcats' four players combine for a 191 to Bowdoin's 161. Wassarman led the Bobcats by scoring a 40, the third-best score out of 11 individuals on the day. Farber again led the way for Bowdoin, shooting a 35.

Meanwhile senior captain Sarah Centanni (Hingham, Mass.) followed Wassarman with a 43, sophomore Chelsea Anglin (Dayton, N.J.) shot a 53 and senior captain Emily Plotnikov (Brooklyn, N.Y.) scored a 55. 

Bates will compete in the Maine State Championships this weekend, Sept. 17-18, at Springbrook Golf Club in Leeds.
