Stekler, Garcia-Bou lead men's golf at Bowdoin Invitational

BRUNSWICK, Maine -- Three Bates players finished among the top 25 over the two days, out of a field of 59, as the Bates men's golf team placed seventh out of 11 teams in the Bowdoin Invitational.

Bates' four-player scores were 312 on Saturday and 323 on Sunday, leaving the Bobcats (635) a stroke behind sixth-place Bowdoin and two behind fifth-place Husson. Bates edged Colby by a stroke. St. Anselm won the tournament at 617.

Senior captain Alex Stekler (Avon, Conn.) and first-year Andrew Garcia-Bou (Eastchester, N.Y.) shot identical 78s on Saturday and 79s on Sunday, tying for 18th place along the way with two other players. 

Junior Matt Marcus (Newton, Mass.) carded a 76-82--158 line to tie three others for 21st place. Senior captain Brad Rutkin (Great Neck, N.Y.) followed Saturday's 80 with an 83 on Sunday to tie for 36th place, and sophomore Liam McLoughlin (New Smyrna Beach, Fla.) shot a 168 to tie for 47th place.

Bates competes next weekend, Sept. 17-18 in the Maine State Championships, to be held at Springbrook Golf Club in Leeds.
