Pierce leads men's golf team at Husson Invitational

BANGOR, Maine -- The Bates men's golf team fielded two four-man squads at the two-day Husson Invitational at Bangor Municipal Golf Course, with its top foursome finishing in fifth place.

Playing for Bates' "B" squad, junior Spencer Pierce (Winnetka, Ill.) led the Bobcats by firing a 77 on Saturday and a 74 Sunday, tying for sixth place out of 47 individuals with a two-day score of 151, 13 over par.

Bates' "A" squad shot 316 on Saturday and 319 Sunday for 635, two strokes behind fourth-place Nichols College. Husson won the event at 601.

Bates' "B" squad tied for sixth place with Maine Maritime at 638, just three strokes behind the Bates A team. The only other B team at the tournament was Husson's, and it finished ninth at 680.

Bates senior captain Brad Rutkin (Great Neck, N.Y.) and sophomore Liam McLoughlin (New Smyrna Beach, Fla.) tied for 18th place overall at 158. Rutkin shot a 77 and an 81, while McLoughlin shot a 76 and an 82.

Sophomore Joey Sallerson (Chicago, Ill.) tied for 26th place at 161, followed by junior Matt Marcus (Newton, Mass.) in 28th (162), while first-year Andrew Garcia-Bou (Eastchester, N.Y.) and senior captain Alex Stekler (Avon, Conn.) carded equal 85-78--163 lines to tie for 29th place. First-year Julien Lewin (Seattle, Wash.) took 33rd place at 165.

The Bates men next complete Thursday at 10am at the Mariner Invitational, to be played at Augusta Country Club in Manchester, Maine.
