BRUNSWICK, Maine -- Senior Bennett Saltzman tied for the 14th-best score out of 55 players, leading the Bates men's golf team to seventh place out of 10 teams at the two-day Bowdoin Invitational.
The Bobcats shot a four-man, two-day, 36-hole combined score of 649, posting a 329 on Saturday and a 320 on Sunday. Bates defeated in-state rivals St. Joseph's (655), Bowdoin (664) and Colby (696) while coming up eight strokes shy of UMaine-Farmington (641). Saint Anselm College won the tournament at 603.
Saltzman (Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.) fired a 77 on Sunday after scoring an 81 Saturday for a team-best score of 158, tying with Remy Fletcher of Nichols College for 14th place.
Senior Matt Marcus (Newton, Mass.) placed 25th at 162, including a second-day score of 79, while senior Spencer Pierce (Winnetka, Ill.) was a stroke behind in 26th place. Junior Liam McLoughlin (New Smyrna Beach, Fla.) tied for 31st place at 166 to round out Bates' scoring.
Bates will next host the Maine State Championships Sept. 16-17 at Martindale Country Club in Auburn.
