Saltzman leads men's golf on first day of NESCAC fall qualifier

NEWINGTON, Conn. -- Senior captain Bennett Saltzman sits in 13th place out of 50 golfers after firing a 78 to lead the Bates men's golf team on day one of the NESCAC fall qualifier. 

The Bobcats shot 336 as a team and are currently in seventh place out of 10 teams. Bates is four strokes ahead of eighth place Colby and nine strokes up on ninth place Bowdoin. They are 12 strokes behind sixth place Middlebury. Tournament host Trinity College shot 299 as a team to lead the field. 

Saltzman (Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.) is just six strokes behind first place Will Kannegieser of Williams College. He is just one stroke back of a five-way tie for eighth place. 

Senior captain Matt Marcus (Newton, Mass.), sophomore Julien Lewin (Seattle, Wash.) and sophomore Andrew Garcia-Bou (Eastchester, N.Y.) each finished the first round with an 86 and sit in a tie for 37th place. Senior Spencer Pierce (Winnetka, Ill.) shot an 87 and is currently tied for 40th in the field.

Action resumes on Sunday at 10:30 a.m. The top four teams at the end of the qualifying tournament will advance to the spring championship at the site of the qualifier winner. Additionally, the top four individual golfers outside of the top four qualifying teams will be eligible to play in the spring championship event.
