LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates men's basketball team won its fourth game in a row Tuesday night, overcoming a hard-nosed UMaine-Presque Isle team by a 60-47 score at Alumni Gym.
Junior Mike Boornazian (Portland, Conn.) led the Bobcats (11-2) with 17 points and four assists, to go with six rebounds and two steals. With senior point guard Graham Safford (Hampden, Maine) sitting the game out, sophomore Jerome Darling (Hartford, Conn.) got the start at point guard and scored a career-high 11 points. Sophomore Malcolm Delpeche (Wilmington, Del.) added nine points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
UMPI dropped to 8-7 with its third straight loss. Chase Vicaire led the Owls with 17 points, while Maurice Harris added 11 points and three blocks. Owl starters Nick Lenhard and Brandon McGill both went scoreless, but shared the team lead with seven rebounds apiece, and Lenhard also dished out five assists.
Fifteen Bates players saw playing time, including first-year guard Shawn Strickland (Middletown, Conn.), who made his college debut and played 11 minutes after missing Bates' first 12 games with illness.
The Bobcats outrebounded the Owls 50-33, including 21 offensive boards, helping them to a 13-3 edge in second-chance points. In addition to Malcolm Delpeche's 10 rebounds, senior Adam Philpott (Gloucester, Mass.) grabbed seven boards, while Boornazian, sophomore Marcus Delpeche (Wilmington, Del.) and junior Josh Britten (Yarmouth, Maine) all had six apiece.
Bates opened the game with a 20-5 run and never saw its lead threatened, though UMPI cut it to single digits late in the second half.
Boornazian assisted Marcus Delpeche on a layup for Bates' first hoop, then scored Bates' next four points for a 6-0 lead. Vicaire countered with a jumper and the game's first 3-pointer to make it 6-5, but Bates then reeled off 14 unanswered points to assume control. Senior Billy Selmon (Atlanta, Ga.) and Darling made back-to-back threes, on assists by Boornazian and senior Cam Kaubris (Rumford, Maine). Darling made a floater, and Kaubris drained a three for a 17-5 lead, assisted by sophomore Max Eaton (St. Petersburg, Fla.). Kaubris returned the favor, assisting an Eaton three at the 11:02 mark for a 20-5 lead.
UMPI closed out the half with an 8-2 run, capped by a Vicaire three with three seconds left to close the deficit to 30-20.
Bates began expanding its lead back to start the second half, aided by a Selmon breakaway dunk that made it 36-22. Two minutes later, Selmon made a brilliant no-look pass to Malcolm Delpeche while saving the ball from going out of bounds, and Delpeche's two-handed flush made it 40-24 with 15:48 to go.
UMPI continued to battle, and the Owls' Trevor Lovely scored five unanswered points to cut the lead into single digits at 44-36 with 8:53 left. UMPI got the deficit down to eight three more times down the stretch, but no closer. A pair of technical fouls called against UMPI allowed Philpott to make four foul shots in a row with 47 seconds remaining, bumping Bates' lead back into double digits at 58-45.
Bates hits the road this weekend to face NESCAC foes Trinity (Friday at 7pm) and Amherst (Saturday at 3pm).
