LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates College men's lacrosse team's extraordinary 2017 season was reflected well Wednesday as the U.S. Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association announced the USILA/Nike Division III All-America teams.
Senior captains Charlie Fay (Falmouth, Maine), Fred Ulbrick (Fairfield, Conn.) and Kyle Weber (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) became the first three First Team All-America selections in program history, while first-year Matt Chlastawa (Westfield, Mass.), senior Andrew Melvin (Medfield, Mass.) and senior Jake Walsh (Baltimore, Md.) all earned Honorable Mention All-America honors, giving the Bobcats a whopping team-record haul of six awards in all.
Sixteen players form the USILA First, Second, and Third Team All-America rosters, respectively, while 101 more are recognized with Honorable Mention All-America honors.
After moving from midfield to attack near the end of the 2016 season, Fay rewrote several team scoring records as a senior, including goals (79) and points (104) in a season. Fay was also named Player of the Year by both the NESCAC and NEILA in 2017. He finished his career with 167 goals, 39 assists and 206 points in just 57 games. Fay becomes Bates' first three-time All-American; he was named to the Second Team in both 2015 and 2016.
Weber also mounted a monster senior campaign, with career-highs of 57 goals and 21 assists, finishing his career with 114 goals, 49 assists and 163 points in 63 games.
Ulbrick continued his career-long exceptional play as Bates' top close defenseman, including a career-high 25 caused turnovers and 38 ground balls. He started in all 63 games of his college career, finishing with 126 ground balls and 65 caused turnovers. Ulbrick is now a two-time All-American, having won Honorable Mention honors in 2016.
The three team captains are all going to play in the 76th USILA North-South All-Star Game this Saturday at Providence College.
Chlastawa (Westfield, Mass.) started all 18 games of his freshman season on attack alongside Fay and Melvin, and he made an explosive impact, finishing with the second-most points in a season in team history with 53 goals and 32 assists. Chlastawa even set an all-divisions NCAA Men's Lacrosse Tournament record with a team-record-tying 13 points (nine goals, four assists) in Bates' 26-14 victory over Amherst in the Sweet Sixteen. Chlastawa also tied Bates' single-game scoring record in that contest with his nine goals, matching Weber's nine from March 12 win over Amherst and Mike D'Addario's nine goals against Gordon in 1997.
Melvin collected a career-high 27 goals, 38 assists and 65 points, leading the Bobcats to their highest total of assists in a season (183) by a margin of 50 over the previous team record of 133 from 1992. (The Bobcats established team records for goals in a season with 309 -- 78 more than the previous team record from 1992.) A three-year starter on Bates' attack, Melvin finished his career with 67 goals and 84 assists for 151 points.
Walsh received his second postseason honor, having also been named Second Team All-New England by the New England Intercollegiate Lacrosse Assocation. Starting all 18 games at midfield for the Bobcats, Walsh tied for second on the team in assists (32) and added a career-high 14 goals, finishing his career with 97 points.
Led by Fay, Ulbrick, Weber, Chlastawa, Melvin and Walsh, Bates' senior class finished their careers with the best season in program history, including a 16-2 final record and the No. 3 ranking in Division III. After a 4-9 freshman season in 2014, the Bobcats were 11-6 in 2015, reaching the NCAA Sweet Sixteen in the program's first national tournament bid, then finishing 11-4 in 2016 and 16-2 in 2017, ending with last week's 14-13 loss at Wesleyan in the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals.
