LEWISTON, Maine -- Bates senior Kyle Weber received the Fran McCall Award as the outstanding midfielder in Division III on Friday, the same day he competed in the North-South Division III All-Star Game.
Weber (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) is the first player in program history to earn a USILA/Nike Player of the Year award. It comes at the end of his finest season, in which he amassed career-highs of 57 goals and 21 assists, including a team-record-tying nine-goal performance against Amherst in March. He finished his career with 114 goals, 49 assists and 163 points in 63 games.
Weber has been equally impressive in the classroom -- he double-majored in mathematics and economics and maintained a cumulative grade point average of over 3.6. On Saturday he was one of 38 Bates graduates to receive the Senior Scholar Award from the Bates Department of Athletics.
Weber and his two fellow senior captains on the Bobcats, attacker Charlie Fay (Falmouth, Maine) and defender Fred Ulbrick (Fairfield, Conn.), were all made First Team All-America selections last week, and on Friday they all played in the North-South game at Providence College, the first year more than one Bobcat had been invited to play in the 76-year-old event. Weber and Fay both scored for the North team and Ulbrick "played great," according to head coach Peter Lasagna, in a 16-11 win for the North.
