LEWISTON, Maine -- The No. 20 nationally ranked Bates men's squash team defeated No. 18 Franklin & Marshall 7-2 Saturday morning before falling to No. 13 Brown by a count of 8-1 in the afternoon at the Bates College Squash Center.

On Saturday, sophomore Garon Rothenberg (Brooklyn, N.Y.) led the way, winning both his matches. Playing at the No. 7 position, Rothenberg defeated Franklin & Marshall's Ricardo Machado 3-0 (12-10, 11-6, 11-9) and won a hard-fought 3-2 (9-11, 11-9, 11-3, 10-12, 11-4) match against Brown's Thomas Walker.

Meanwhile, senior captain Anirudh Nambiar (Pune, India) played by far the most squash on the day. Both of his matches went the full five games. Playing at the No. 5 position, Nambiar defeated Franklin & Marshall's Boden Polikoff 3-2 (11-5, 5-11, 11-4, 13-15, 11-7) before falling 3-2 (2-11, 11-6, 10-12, 11-6, 11-6) to Brown's Nicholas Pitaro.

The Bobcats swept three matches against the Diplomats (3-10) in the morning contest. Junior Coley Cannon (Greenwich, Conn.) and sophomore Benni McComish (Williamstown, Mass.) joined Rothenberg in picking up sweeps. Cannon won 3-0 (11-9, 11-8, 11-7) over Kingman Bassett at the No. 6 position and McComish defeated Frank Murray 3-0 (11-6, 11-8, 11-7) at the No. 8 position.

Junior captain McLeod Abbott (Bronxville, N.Y.) and first-year Dylan Muldoon (Devonshire, Bermuda) both bounced back from dropping their first games to win their matches. Abbott knocked off Samm Fulton 3-1 (5-11, 11-7, 11-7, 13-11) at the No. 4 position and Muldoon won 3-1 (6-11, 11-6, 11-9, 11-8) against Jack McCord at the No. 9 position.

Sophomore Graham Bonnell (Southport, Conn.) impressed at the No. 2 position with a 3-1 (11-6, 11-2, 11-13, 11-8) victory over the Diplomats' Silvio Soom.

The Bobcats' 8-1 loss to Brown in the afternoon was much closer than it appears on paper. The Bears (4-4) swept three matches but the Bobcats forced five of the matches to the full five games, with Rothenberg winning at No. 7. In addition to Nambiar's hard-fought loss at No. 5, first-year Omar Attia (Cairo, Egypt) gave Andrew Wei all he could handle in a 3-2 (11-8, 8-11, 11-2, 6-11, 11-9) loss at the No. 3 position. Cannon also battled for the full five games before falling 3-2 (10-12, 11-7, 11-5, 4-11, 11-9) to Blake Gilbert-Bono at the No. 6 position and McComish fell 3-2 (6-11, 11-2, 8-11, 11-3, 11-9) to Harrison Boyer at the No. 8 position.

The Bobcats (9-3) now gear up for the NESCAC Championships, taking place February 2-4 on the campus of Hamilton College. Bates has finished second two years in a row at NESCAC's behind only defending national champion Trinity.
