WENHAM, Mass. -- Sophomore Jacob Kauppila and junior Duane Davis led the Bates men's tennis team at Saturday's North Shore Invitational hosted by Endicott and Gordon.

The format featured four different flights of best-of-three matchups, with two singles matches and a doubles match for each pair of players.

Kauppila (Chesterfield, Mo.) and Davis (Dix Hills, N.Y.) competed in the A flight and defeated Colby-Sawyer's Nick Mathieu and Gustav Jigrup in the quarterfinals. Kauppila beat Mathieu 8-5 in singles and Davis won by default over Jigrup. In doubles play, the pair also won, this time in a close 8-7 (7-3) match to advance to the semifinals against Southern New Hampshire's Tiago Fernandes and Miguel Marreiros.

Kauppila and Davis defeated Fernandes and Marreiros in doubles play by a count of 8-7 (7-1). However, the pair both lost their respective singles matches to end their day in the A flight tournament.

In the B flight, senior Andrew Berghuis (Toronto, Ontario) defeated Babson College's Cameron Gruss by a score of 8-4 in the quarterfinals. However, he and first-year Robert Kennedy (New York, N.Y.) really got rolling in the B flight consolation matches. They teamed to defeat Matthew Murphy and Andrew Vroman of Holy Cross in doubles by a score of 8-4. Berghuis knocked off Vroman 8-4 in singles and Kennedy won 8-0 over Murphy.

After losing to the Babson pair of Ben Roque and Dylan Levy in the C flight quarterfinals, first-year Owen Greenwood (Wellesley Hills, Mass.) and junior Dylan Davis (Dix Hills, N.Y.) rebounded nicely in the consolation matches. They beat Will Jeffreys and Peter Godwin of Gordon College by a score of 8-7 (7-5) in doubles. Then Greenwood beat Jeffreys 8-4 in singles and Davis won 8-4 as well over Godwin.

The Bobcat men's tennis team is back in action Saturday Oct, 21 through Sunday Oct. 22 when they host the Wallach Invitational.
