DELAWARE, Ohio -- Junior Sean Enos placed fourth in the discus throw Saturday in the final event of the 2014 NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships for the Bates men's track and field team, recording his fifth career All-America honor with another personal-record performance.
Enos had a strong first attempt in the event trials, setting a new personal record at 51.77 meters. He bettered that on his third attempt at 52.45 meters, or 172 feet and 1 inch -- 8 feet and 2 inches, or nearly 2.5 meters, beyond his personal record at the start of the day. The mark had him in fourth place entering the finals. The event's order of finish went completely unchanged in the finals, from places 1 through 9.
Enos also finished fourth in the hammer throw two days ago with a personal-record distance, and he finished fourth in the discus one year ago for his first career All-America award. His two fourth-place finishes in this year's NCAA championship gives Bates a final count of 10 team points, tying Connecticut College, Washington and Lee, Dubuque, Ohio Northern and Wilmington (Ohio) for 26th place among 82 scoring teams.
With another year left in his career, Enos is already the Bates men's track and field and cross country program's seventh student-athlete ever to claim five or more All-America laurels, joining David Pless '13 (10), Justin Easter '03 (6; 7 including Nordic skiing), John Fitzgerald '87 (5), Peter Goodrich '89 (5), Lucas Adams '00 (5) and Matt Twiest '00 (5).
