INDIANAPOLIS -- Five student-athletes will represent the Bates men's track and field team this week at the NCAA Division III Indoor Championships, to compete in the distance medley relay and the weight throw.

Junior Adedire Fakorede (Newark, N.J.) will compete in the 35-pound weight throw as the fifth seed in a field of 15, based on his season-best effort of 18.38 meters. Fakorede burst onto the scene a year ago by finishing third in the same event.

Bates will also compete as the fourth seeded team in the distance medley relay, based on a qualifying time of 9:57.76. It is the fifth time in the past six years that Bates will compete in the DMR at NCAAs. Senior captain Patrick Griffin (Harvard, Mass.) leads the team off in the 1,200-meter leg, followed by sophomore Michael Somma (Colts Neck, N.J.) in the 400-meter leg, junior Rob Flynn (Bedford, N.H.) in the 800 and junior Jack Kiely (Severna Park, Md.) in the anchor 1,600-meter leg.

The championships will be held March 10-11 at the Res Rec Center in Naperville, Illinois, with North Central College serving as the official host. The NCAA provides live video streaming at http://www.ncaa.com/liveschedule.

For each men's individual event contested, the top 15 declared student-athletes were accepted into the competition. For each relay event contested, the top 12 declared relay teams, one per institution, were accepted into the competition.

This will be Fakorede's third career appearance at an NCAA Championship, the second for both Flynn and Griffin, and the first for Kiely and Somma.

All five team members were also named USTFCCCA All-Region on Monday, with Griffin receiving the award in both the distance medley relay and the 800-meter run. To be named All-Region, an athlete must either be ranked in the top-5 of an individual event in the region according to final TFRRS data or be part of a top-3 relay team.
