SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -- The No. 21 Bates men's cross country team placed second out of 16 teams and kept it close against seventh-ranked RPI on Saturday at the Saratoga Invitational.
RPI's Grant O'Connor and Sean O'Connor finished first and second to lead the Engineers to the meet win. RPI is the second-ranked team in the Atlantic Region, while Bates is ranked fifth in New England.
RPI scored 37 points, followed by Bates with 54. Vassar finished third with 116 points.
Senior captains Zach Magin (West Hartford, Conn.) and Ben Tonelli (Seattle, Wash.) led Bates with sixth- and ninth-place finishes, respectively, out of 235 individuals overall. Magin covered the 8-kilometer course at Saratoga Spa State Park in 25:40.3 while Tonelli crossed the finish line in 25:50.8.
Bates' five scorers at the meet all finished within the top 14. Junior Ryan Betz (Indianapolis, Ind.) took 12th place (25:58.0), senior Matt Morris (Rockville, Md.) placed 13th (26:00.9) and sophomore Justin Levine (Boca Raton, Fla.) came in 14th (26:02.8).
Junior Henry Colt (Whatley, Mass.) and sophomore James Jones (Colorado Springs, Colo.) were the team's displacers, finishing 19th (26:11.0) and 23rd (26:19.8), respectively. It was the first race this season for Jones, who was the team's leading runner last season and the 2016 NESCAC Rookie of the Year. Senior Stephen Rowe (Gambier, Ohio) was 26th (26:23.8).
Bates will next race in the Maine State Championships, taking place at Bowdoin with a 2:30 start for the men's race.
