HADLEY, Mass. -- Bates senior captain Zach Magin received First Team All-NESCAC honors Tuesday, as the New England Small College Athletic Conference announced its 2017 Cross Country All-Conference Teams.
Led by Magin's (West Hartford, Conn.) sixth-place individual finish, the Bates men's team took third place out of 11 teams Saturday while playing host to the NESCAC Championships at Pineland Farms, in the Bobcats' best conference finish since tying for second in 2011.
Magin, a five-time NESCAC All-Academic selection, earns First Team All-NESCAC honors for his top-seven finish, the first of his career. He finished the race in 25:32.5, a half-second behind Amherst's Cosmo Brossy and 1.8 seconds ahead of seventh-place Harrison Knowlton of Middlebury.
Fellow senior captain Ben Tonelli (Seattle, Wash.) surged down the stretch to take 16th place in 25:51.4, followed closely by junior Ryan Betz (Indianapolis, Ind.), who placed 18th (25:53.4) in his best collegiate race thus far. Junior Henry Colt (Whatley, Mass.) finished 34th (26:19.1) and senior Stephen Rowe (Gambier, Ohio) took 35th (26:19.5) to round out the Bobcats, team scoring. Bates' displacers were sophomore Justin Levine (Boca Raton, Fla.) in 37th place (26:23.5) and senior Matt Morris (Rockville, Md.) in 69th (26:55.1).
Bates, ranked No. 28 in Division III, will look to carry its momentum into the NCAA New England Regionals, taking place Nov. 11 at Gorham (Maine) Country Club and hosted by the University of Southern Maine.
