Bates rowers receive academic honors from USRowing; Steenstra named NIRC Women's Coach of the Year

WORCESTER, Mass. -- USRowing and the National Invitational Rowing Championships (NIRC) on Thursday announced the regatta's postseason awards, with Bates head coach Peter Steenstra receiving his third coaching honor in two days, as he was recognized NIRC Women's Coach of the Year.

Bates, ninth-year head coach Steenstra captured Women's Coach of the Year honors after Bates' varsity eight defeated Williams College by .401 seconds to capture gold on Lake Quinsigamond last Friday. The Bates second varsity eight (W2V8) also snagged gold hardware while the W3V8 secured silver. The Bobcats will represent the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) in the NCAA Division III Championships, marking the program's 11th consecutive trip to the national stage.

USRowing and the New England Rowing Championships also announced NERC All-Scholar Award winners on Thursday; Bates' winners of the NERC All-Scholar award were sophomore Eric Jordan (Stratham, N.H.) from the Bates men's team and sophomore Lena Rintell (Brookline, Mass.) from the women's team. The award recognizes the athlete from each program that holds the highest cumulative grade point average. Freshmen and first-year transfers are not eligible for the award as the recipient must have completed one full year at their current institution.

Over 300 student-athletes in all were recognized on the NIRC All-Academic team, having completed one full-year at their institution (freshmen and first-year transfers are not eligible), maintained a cumulative GPA of 3.35 and been recognized as a varsity letter winner. 

Bates student-athletes receiving the honor were senior Abigail Bierman (Bethlehem, N.Y.), senior Benjamin Whitehead (Shaker Heights, Ohio), sophomore Claudia Glickman (Bellaire, Texas), Jordan, junior Grace Jurkovich (St. Paul, Minn.), junior Hanna De Bruyn (Old Lyme, Conn.), junior Isabella Miller (New York, N.Y.), junior Jessica Vocaturo (Columbus, N.J.), junior Joshua Bilchik (Brookline, Mass.), senior Julia Mason (Niskayuna, N.Y.), senior Katherine Traquina (Wayland, Mass.), Rintell, junior Mats Terwiesch (Wynnewood, Pa.), senior Molly Pritz (Ithaca, N.Y.), sophomore Nadja Steiner (New York, N.Y.), junior Quinn Gardner (Tucson, Ariz.), sophomore Trevor Fry (Groton, Mass.), junior Roderick Pratt (Arlington, Mass.), junior Rosemary Kyne (Nashville, Tenn.), sophomore Sophie Claus (Beverly, Mass.), senior William Lehrer (Winchester, Mass.) and senior William Nelson (New Canaan, Conn.).
