Men's basketball picks up NESCAC win over Colby

WATERVILLE, Maine -- Senior center Ed Bogdanovich (Portland, Maine) had a game-high 19 points and the Bates men's basketball team had just four turnovers in the game in a 66-56 win over Colby College in New England Small College Athletic Conference play Friday night at Wadsworth Gymnasium.

Bates moves to 6-9 overall and 1-2 in NESCAC play, while the Mules fall to 4-8 overall and 1-1 in the league.

The Bobcats used a 22-15 rebounding advantage in the opening half to take a 31-22 lead at the break. The Mules cut the lead to 40-32 on a basket by Danny Chase with 15:31 to play. However, Bates took over from that point and used a 13-4 run to take its largest lead of the game at 53-36 with 8:26 to play.

Colby cut the lead to six points on two occasions in the final 2:01 of the contest. With the score 59-53 with 2:01 to play, senior Mark Brust (Duxbury, Mass.) hit a free throw with one minute to play and junior Luke Matarazzo (Shelton, Conn.) nailed a pair of free throws with 44 seconds remaining for a 62-53 margin. Colby's Sam Willson made a 3-point shot with 39 seconds left to cut the lead to 62-56, but Matarazzo hit two more free throws with 32 seconds left to stretch the lead to eight.

Bogdanovich shot 9-for-18 from the field, while Matarazzo was 8-for-8 from the foul line on the way to 11 points. Brust also had 11 points and added six rebounds and three assists. Junior Sean Cunningham (Amherst, Mass.) had seven points and a team- and career-high five assists, while first-year Mike Boornazian (Portland, Conn.) added seven points and a team-high eight boards.

Chase was 6-for-9 from the field and had 16 points to pace Colby. Willson was 6-for-10 and chipped in 15 points. Chris Hudnut added nine points and seven rebounds, Shane Rogers had a game-high six assists, and Patrick Stewart had a game-high 10 boards.
