HADLEY, Mass. – Bates senior Meredith Kelly had never received All-NESCAC honors in women's basketball before Wednesday, when she received her just due as one of the finest players in the conference. The 5-foot-8 guard and team co-captain was not only named First Team All-Conference, but NESCAC Defensive Player of the Year as well.
To underscore her unique talents and stature: Kelly (Cohasset, Mass.) is the first player to lead the NESCAC in scoring and win Defensive Player of the Year honors.
Kelly averaged 21.6 points per game, a whopping 5.7 points more than any other NESCAC player, setting Bates' team records for points in a season (518), game (42) and half (25). She added a career-high 6.0 rebounds per game and ranked fifth in the conference in free-throw percentage, at a career-best .801. Kelly also added the 3-pointer to her offensive repertoire this season, hitting 21-of-74 shots from behind the arc (.284) after entering the season a career 3-for-17 (.176).
Bates' premier defender for the past four seasons and the 2011 NESCAC Rookie of the Year, Kelly led the league in steals this season, with 2.83 per game, and grabbed a career-high 6.0 rebounds per game, including 3.2 on the defensive glass. She often guarded the opponent's best player and proved indefatigable despite averaging 36.6 minutes and not missing a game. She is the first Defensive Player of the Year in team history.
Kelly missed the first eight games of her junior season due to injury, but still finished seventh on Bates' all-time scoring list, with 1,207.
Kelly will also be a NESCAC Winter All-Academic selection for maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.35 or above. During the season she was selected to participate in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association's "So You Want to be a Coach" program.
