BRUNSWICK, Maine -- MIT shot 64 percent from the field en route to a 84-71 victory over the Bates women's basketball team on Tuesday afternoon in the opening game of the 2014 Coastal Maine Classic hosted by Bowdoin College.
The Engineers improved to 5-5 while the Bobcats fell to 6-4.
Sabrina Drammis led the way for MIT with 28 points and 12 rebounds. Maya Ramachandran scored 20 points with nine caroms and two blocks while Liana Ilutzi (15) and Osheiza Otori (13) also saw double figures.
Bates was paced by 19 points from senior captain Molly Brown (South Dartmouth, Mass.), while sophomore Allie Coppola (Tarrytown, N.Y.) had her fourth double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
First-year forward Nina Davenport (Freeport, Maine), a recent transfer to Bates, scored 14 points in her collegiate debut, while sophomore Bernadette Connors (Windham, N.H.) also notched 14. Junior Chelsea Nason (Boxford, Mass.) and also scored in double digits with 10 points. Senior Kristin Calvo (South Deerfield, Mass.) handed out seven assists for the Bobcats.
Only three reserves saw playing time, including Davenport and first-year guards Emily Freedland (Marblehead, Mass.) and Jackie Welch (Falmouth, Maine), who made her collegiate debut after missing Bates' first nine games due to illness.
The Engineers were red hot from the field, connecting on 74% of their shots in the opening frame. The Bobcats were able to stay within striking distance, however, as they forced 10 MIT turnovers and connected on five three-pointers to trim the lead to just 41-39 at intermission despite hitting on just 37% of their field goals.
MIT finally was able to shake Bates early in the second half with an 11-2 run, capped by 3-pointer from Ilutzi with 9:38 to go that made it 65-54. Coppolla trimmed the MIT lead to six points, 71-65, on a pair of free throws with six minutes to go, but that was as close as the Bobcats would get. MIT quickly pushed the lead back to double figures with a 4-0 surge and pushed the final margin to 13 points.
Action will continue tomorrow at Bowdoin as Bates will play Clark University at 2pm.
