BRUNSWICK, Maine -- Bowdoin defeated the Bates women's basketball team for the second time in a week, 72-55, on Saturday afternoon at Morrell Gymnasium.
The Polar Bears improve to 10-3 (1-1 NESCAC). Bates falls to 3-9 (0-2 NESCAC) with the loss.
In a game that was considerably closer than last weekend's 82-54 tilt in Lewiston, the Polar Bears took the lead for good in the second quarter but couldn't put the Bobcats away until late in the fourth quarter.
Tied at 11 after the opening period, Bowdoin rolled off a 9-0 run midway through the second quarter, sparked by two Marle Curle 3-pointers, to take a nine-point lead late in the half. Bowdoin carried a 31-22 lead into halftime.
Bates got as close as five points on two occasions in the third quarter, but Bowdoin answered every Bobcat run. Shannon Brady keyed a 9-2 run to close the period as Bowdoin entered the final quarter with a 53-41 lead. Bates could get no closer than seven points in the final quarter as the Polar Bears walked away with the win.
Curle totaled 13 points, 11 assists and six rebounds in the win for Bowdoin. Shannon Brady led all players with 24 points while also blocking three shots and grabbing five rebounds for the Polar Bears.
Bates was led by 17 points from sophomore Nina Davenport (Freeport, Maine), who also had nine rebounds and three steals. Senior Chelsea Nason (Boxford, Mass.) had 14 points, including four 3-pointers, to go with six rebounds and three blocked shots for the Bobcats. Senior Bernadette Connors (Windham, N.H.) contributed eight points, six rebounds and three assists.
Bates was able to stay within striking distance thanks in part to a 43-40 edge in rebounding, which included 15 offensive boards that were cashed in for 12 second-chance points. but the Polar Bears got 22 bench points compared to just two for Bates.
Bates will travel to Endicott for a 7pm non-conference game on Tuesday night.
