Women's lacrosse suffers first loss in six games, 11-6 at Bowdoin

BRUNSWICK, Maine -- No. 12 Bowdoin held the No. 19 nationally ranked Bates women's lacrosse team scoreless for a span of 35 minutes in an 11-6 NESCAC victory on Wednesday at Ryan Field. The Polar Bears improve to 10-2 (5-2 NESCAC) while the Bobcats fall to 7-5 (3-4 NESCAC) with their first loss in the past six games.

Bates senior Briana Gross (Andover, Mass.) led scored a pair of goals to lead the Bobcats in scoring. Junior Joan O'Neill (Westwood, Mass.) scored once and assisted on two others, while junior Jenna Dannis (Milford, N.H.) and first-year Wally Pierce (Weston, Mass.) added a goal and an assist apiece. Sophomore Linnea Fulton (Bristol, R.I.) had a team-high four ground balls and senior goalie Mara Krueger (St. Louis, Mo.) made 10 saves.

Katie Stewart added four caused turnovers, five ground balls and two draw controls to her game-high three goals. Carolyn Gorajek scored two goals with two assists for the Polar Bears.

The Polar Bears jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the first 7:11 thanks to a goal and two assists from Gorajek. After Gross cut the lead to 4-2 at the 16:34 mark of the first half, Bates went scoreless for the next 35:07, spanning the remainder of the opening period and well into the second half. During the scoreless streak, Bowdoin tallied five times to increase their lead to 9-2 with under 12 minutes to play.

The Bobcats came alive with four goals in a span of 4:14 and came within three goals, 9-6, on O'Neill's score with 7:13 to go. Bowdoin was able to stem the tide and sealed the win with two late scores from Katy Dissinger and Stewart.

Tara Connolly made nine saves in net for Bowdoin, who held a 30-20 edge in shots.

Bates plays at Trinity on Saturday at 11 a.m.
