HADLEY, Mass – Bates College women's lacrosse sophomore Cara Cappellini has earned NESCAC Player of the Week honors after scoring six goals, including five against Wesleyan, during the week of March 3-9.
On Saturday against the Cardinals, the Manhasset, N.Y., native tallied six points on her five goals and an assist scoring three goals in the second half. She needed just six shots to score her five goals with her one other shot ricocheting off the post.
Cappellini scored twice in the second period's first three minutes to break a 4-4 tie and give Bates a 6-4 lead. She also recorded two caused turnovers and a draw control in the team's first NESCAC win of the season.
"With the defense they were running, I was able to get open, but it was definitely a team effort. If it wasn't for people feeding me, it wouldn't have been possible," Cappellini told the Lewiston Sun Journal after the Wesleyan game.
Earlier in the week, she notched a goal, three draw controls, and two caused turnovers in a 16-5 win over Southern Maine.
After missing all of last season due to a knee injury, the Manhasset High School product ranks third on the team this year in both points (10) and goals (nine) while tying for the team lead in caused turnovers (eight).
Cappellini and the Bobcats return to action tomorrow against Babson at 5:30 p.m. in a game moved up one day due to weather concerns.
