Middlebury defeats women's squash in NESCAC Third-Place Match

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- Middlebury College defeated the No. 16 nationally ranked Bates women's squash team 7-2 on Sunday in the Third-Place Match of the NESCAC Women's Squash Championship at Williams, in their final match before CSA Team Nationals. The fourth-seeded Bobcats finish the tournament in fourth place.

Senior Nessrine Ariffin (Penang, Malaysia) and junior Lauren Williams (Bulawayo, Zimbabwe) won the points for the Bobcats (10-10). Ariffin rose to 16-4 at the No. 1 position in the lineup this season with a 3-0 (11-2, 11-7, 11-1) defeat of Saska Pownell-Gray. Williams was a 3-1 (11-8, 11-7, 3-11, 12-10) winner over Katie Dewey at No. 7. Senior captains Myriam Kelly (Bronx, N.Y.) and Chloe Mitchell (Chatham, N.J.) both fell in five games.

Middlebury rose to 15-6 with its second win over Bates in two weeks.

The Bobcats compete next weekend in the College Squash Association Team Nationals in Boston, with rankings and seedings to be determined.
