Stone, Londoner play well in women's tennis loss at Amherst

AMHERST, Mass. -- Sophomores Bella Stone and Hannah Londoner played competitive singles matches as the Bates women's tennis team lost 8-0 against No. 13 nationally ranked Amherst on Saturday night, in a NESCAC match played at Hampshire College.

Amherst (5-4, 3-0 NESCAC) swept doubles play en route to the win, but the Mammoths (Amherst's newly adopted nickname, announced last week) ran into obstacles at the No. 3 and No. 6 positions in singles play.

Stone (Concord, Mass.) won the first set 6-2 before Camilla Trapness matched her with a 6-2 win in the second set, then prevailed 11-9 in the tiebreaker.

Londoner (Westport, Conn.) battled with Claire Carpenter at No. 6 singles to an unfinished result, with the score 6-3, 5-2 in Carpenter's favor.

Bates continues on to play at Trinity on Sunday at 2pm.
