BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Bates women's track crowned two All-Americans on the first day of the NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships Friday, as senior Katherine Cook took third place in the 5,000-meter run, breaking her own team record in the process, while junior Ayden Eickhoff qualified for the finals in the 800-meter run.
Cook (South Burlington, Vt.) broke her own team record -- the one that had her seeded first in the race going in -- by 0.35 seconds with her time of 16:38.72. She finished 1.89 seconds behind runner-up Taryn Cordani of Ithaca and 2.54 seconds ahead of fourth-place Paige Lawler of Washington University. Tufts' Brittany Bowman won the race in 16:31.32.
Cook earned her second All-America award in her second career NCAA Championship, following up on last fall's All-America cross country performance. She will also run in the 3,000 meters on Saturday, as the eighth seed.
Eickhoff (Corvallis, Mont.) ran the fourth-fastest time out of 17 women in the 800-meter trials, clocking in at 2:14.26 in placing second in her heat, automatically qualifying for the finals. With only eight competitors in the finals, she is already assured of her third career All-America honor. Eickhoff entered the event as the ninth seed, based on her season-best time of 2:13.33.
Saturday promises more big things for the Bobcats, with all three of the team's athletes at the meet competing. Senior Sally Ceesay (Bronx, N.Y.) is the second seed in the triple jump, starting at 2pm Central time. The The women's 800 finals will take place at 3:50, followed by Cook in the 3,000-meter run at 4:45.
