Women's cross country defeats Colby in season-opening Class Races

WATERVILLE, Maine -- The Bates women's cross country team swept the season-opening Bates/Colby Class Races on Saturday, winning the Junior/Senior race 30-25 in modified scoring, then prevailing in the First Year/Sophomore race in dominating fashion for a 65-45 combined win.

Colby, ranked right behind Bates at No. 7 in New England, claimed the first two places in the Junior/Senior race, but the Bobcats, ranked sixth in New England, swept the following five places for a five-point margin of victory. Both sides' first five runners figure in the scoring, with the first runner earning 10 points on down to one point for the 10th scorer. High score wins under this modified race format.

Senior Elena Jay (West Hartford, Conn.) finished the 3-mile course in 19:39.39 in sweltering conditions, followed closely behind by fellow senior captain Sarah Fusco (Cheshire, Conn.) in 19:41.64. Senior Erica Gagnon (Weymouth, Mass.) came in fifth overall in 20:05.06, followed by junior Addie Cullenberg (Farmington, Maine) in 20:12.03 and junior Julia Fisher (Philadelphia, Pa.) in seventh (20:17.05).

Bates sophomore Jessica Wilson (Cumberland, Maine) won the First Year/Sophomore race with Bates' fastest time of the day, at 19:32.46. The Bobcats occupied third through fifth places as well, with first-year Katherine Cook (South Burlington, Vt.) in third (19:48.14), sophomore Molly Chisholm (Wayland, Mass.) in fourth (20:15.85) and sophomore Lily Rogers-Grant (Afton, Minn.) in fifth at 20:47.34. First-year Rachael Rosow (Avon, Conn.) rounded out Bates' scoring in seventh place (21:33.63), with four teammates following her in the race order but out of the scoring.

Bates, tied with St. Benedict and North Central (Ill.) colleges for the USTFCCCA's No. 35 national ranking, next competes at the Bowdoin Invitational on Sept. 27 at 11am.
