Bates senior Noah Gauthier(Amherst, N.H.) has his sights set on winning an NCAA 35-pound weight throw crown in this year's Division III Indoor Championships. On Saturday at the Maine State Indoor Championships, hosted by Bowdoin College, Gauthier showed that so far, he is well within reach of his goal. The two-time All-American won both the shot put (49'09.75") and the weight throw at the meet, while breaking the meet's 32-year-old record in the weight throw with a heave of 60 feet and 3.75 inches, nine inches farther than the mark established in 1976 by Bowdoin's Larry Waithe. Gauthier's is currently the second-best throw in Division III this season.
Gauthier was the easy choice for his third consecutive Peter Goodrich Most Valuable Field Athlete Award, leading Bates to a strong third place showing. Bates dominated the throwing events, with Gauthier and sophomore Rich McNeil (Lawrence, Mass.) finishing 1-2 in both the weight throw and the shot put, while seniorMatt Lopez (Lexington, Mass.) took third place in the weight throw and sixth in the shot put.
