LEWISTON, Maine -- Members of the Bates Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) proudly presented a check for more than $1,300 to the Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund on Friday, after a successful fundraiser conducted by SAAC last weekend.
Last weekend's effort represented a "great response from the campus community," with funds accumulated from approximately 300 individual donations, said Nordic ski coach and SAAC advisor Becky Woods '89. The Bates SAAC's efforts were part of a New England Small College Athletic Conference initiative.
Serendipitously accepting the check on behalf of the Red Cross was Vantiel Elizabeth Duncan '10, a six-time track and field All-American at Bates who is now regional philanthropy officer for the American Red Cross of Maine. "Tiel spoke to the athletes about how the money was utilized throughout the Red Cross, and the ways they were going to have an impact across the country, helping with all of the natural disasters that have happened in the past few month. That was powerful for the SAAC to hear," Woods said.
Funds were raised over three days, culminating with the home football game last Saturday against Bowdoin and a drawing for a gift bag provided by the Bates Bookstore. Dining Services staff provided hot chocolate, and Bates maintenance staff were also helpful in SAAC's effort.
SAAC members presenting the check to the Red Cross were Olivia Amdur, Holland Doyle, Rob Flynn, Max Hummel, Leo Lukens, Avery MacMullen, Shelbie McCormack and Maisie Silverman. SAAC members unable to attend were James Bullock, Srishti Sunil, Dan Trulli, and Walter Washington.
