LEWISTON, Maine -- The wooden bleachers dating back to at least the 1950s are already gone from 92-year-old Alumni Gymnasium, the home of Bates varsity basketball and volleyball. The old maplewood floor, too thin to be sanded anymore, will soon follow.
In their place, a new maple floor emblazoned with more current branding will be installed by May 14. Following that, by mid-June, automatically retractable seating, including permanent bleachers for the stage area on the Central Avenue end of the court, will be installed.
In his continuing Campus Construction Update series, the Bates Communications Office's Doug Hubley fills us in on the state of Alumni Gym as it undergoes a welcome facelift.
The final result, it can be reported with certainty, is eagerly anticipated by Bobcat Nation.
